One-On-One Mobile English Literacy Classroom for Adults

Walk into the School on Wheels bus, and you’ll see smiling volunteers of all ages teaching adults of different language levels reading and writing skills that will improve their quality of life at home and work. You’ll hear them playing phonic games, role playing, reading stories, and gently correcting a student’s pronunciation. Volunteers are the wheels that make our program run.

School on Wheels is a 40-foot bus converted into a mobile classroom where students go because they want to learn and where volunteers go because they want to help others. It starts with our easy and fun trainings where volunteers learn in simple steps how to be literacy tutors. Each volunteer is matched with an adult student who is eager to learn. They meet in our mobile classroom for one hour once a week at a convenient location, usually next to a partnering church, library or community center.

The barriers that prevent many adults with low English literacy skills from learning to read and write are lack of money, time, transportation and childcare as well as fear and embarrassment. School on Wheels removes these barriers by providing free tutoring in day and evening shifts for adults in their own communities and allowing children to accompany their parents while they learn. Our volunteers teach adults how to read and write at their own pace in a friendly and supportive environment.

School on Wheels tutors are now helping 450 students living in and near Cicero, Hodgkins, Lombard, Summit, Villa Park, Westmont and Woodridge. We also offer free computer classes to help our students improve their job skills and help their children with their computer homework! Call us to learn how you can help!
