Laugh for Literacy 2011 brought together hundreds of volunteers, friends and neighbors for an evening of theater, food and friendship to benefit adult literacy. Guests enjoyed a fun night of comedy while feasting on a vast selection of fabulous Spanish tapas from Emilio's Tapas Restaurant in Hillside and delectable deserts.

2011 Gratitude Award RecipientLongtime tutor Mary L. Schulte (left) received the “2011 Gratitude Award” at Laugh for Literacy for her “inspiring service and dedication” to adult literacy. Schulte, a busy financial consultant, generously makes time to tutor for School on Wheels and to personally help her students navigate many of life’s challenges.

Irma Maciel receives ESL Student Success Award Former Executive Director Barbara Bernhard presented the ESL Student Success Award to Irma Maciel of Darien, Ill. for her accomplishments. In just ten years Maciel went from being a beginner-level student of School on Wheels to becoming a full-time ESL teacher at Eisenhower Elementary School in Darien.

Who knew raising money to help adults learn life-changing reading and writing skills could be so much fun? At the pre-performance reception, guests enjoyed cocktails and wine with appetizers provided by Emilio’s Tapas Restaurant and various local food and wine establishments. Lucky raffle winners walked away with baskets filled with jewelry, wine, and spa and restaurant certificates.
