Tutor Info
Schools on Wheels’ volunteer tutors make a difference in an adult's way of life by providing tools of the English language to:
- Prepare most students to speak English for the first time.
- Complete job applications and prepare for interviews
- Read over-the-counter medication and prescription labels
- Study for and pass the GED exam and
U.S. citizenship tests
- Communicate with health care providers and teachers
- Advance in job positions by speaking English
Free training for volunteer tutors is offered periodically, usually on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the year. The sessions take place at the Sisters of St. Joseph in LaGrange Park, Illinois.
Training requires a time commitment of 12 hours on 2 consecutive Saturdays. Training sessions include classroom instruction and observation in the School on Wheels’ mobile classroom.
