Questions & Answers

After completing training, how many hours a week am I expected to tutor?
Minimum requirement is one hour per week with the same student on the same day at the same location and time of day.

Must I commit to tutor for a full school year?
Yes, it is preferred to provide continuity for the student.

Do I take the bus to my tutoring site?
No. Students and tutors provide their own transportation to the site.

When is School on Wheels (SOW) in session?
The SOW's calendar matches the school year with a 6-week optional summer session.

How are students assigned to tutors?
Can I pick my own student?

Program staff matches tutors and students with similar time, day and location availability. Individual preferences are considered when possible.

What type of funding supports the School on Wheels?
The Sisters of St. Joseph Congregation sponsors School on Wheels with additional funding donated by individuals, local civic groups, corporations, and grants from foundations and government agencies. This project was made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. Any donation of time, talent or funds is gratefully accepted and acknowledged for tax purposes.
