Monica Schneider, CLTV Anchor Awards Emcee
CLTV Anchor MONICA SCHNEIDER served as the emcee of the first annual English SUCCESS Awards and recalled her own childhood as the daughter of German immigrant parents. Monica Schneider was among the first employees to join the CLTV as an anchor/reporter before the station’s launch in late 1992. Monica currently anchors the CLTV weekend evening news and is a general assignment reporter. She counts among her more memorable experiences working for CLTV; covering the Dan Rostenkowski indictment live from Washington D.C. in 1994; anchoring from the Democratic National Convention in 1996; and covering the 1999 Papal visit live from St. Louis. She also enjoyed hosting the news call-in program Front & Center from 1993 to 1999. |
Thomas R. Fitzgerald Supreme Court Justice First District Awards Presenter The 2007 English SUCCESS Awards were presented by Illinois Supreme Court Justice THOMAS R. FITZGERALD, who spoke about the great contributions immigrants have made in America and the value of citizenship and civic involvement in shaping the future of the country. A native of Chicago, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas R. Fitzgerald began his law career as a prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. He served as a trial judge in the Criminal Court from 1976 to 1987 when he was assigned Supervising Judge of Traffic Court. In 1989 he returned to the Criminal Division as Presiding Judge. He was elected to the Supreme Court of Illinois for the First District in 2000 Justice Fitzgerald has served as president of the Illinois Judges’ Association, chair of the Illinois Supreme Court Special Committee on Capital Cases, member of the Governor’s Task Force on Crime and Corrections, chairman of several committees of the Illinois Judicial Conference, and past chairman of the Chicago Bar Association’s committees on long-range planning and constitutional law. |
Tom Miller Author of How I Learned English Keynote Speaker TOM MILLER has been writing about Latin America and the American Southwest for more than thirty years. His most recent title is How I Learned English, with contributions from some 55 accomplished Latinos whose first language was Spanish and whose second (or third or fourth) language is English. The book includes pieces by Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal, television host Cristina, Congressman José Serrano, and musician Paquito D’Rivera, as well as authors Elena Poniatowska, Ariel Dorfman, and Rubén Martínez. Ray Suarez of PBS has written the book’s Foreword, and Frank McCourt its Afterword. Tom Miller’s works have appeared in The New Yorker, LIFE, The New York Times, Natural History, and many other publications. His book On the Border has been optioned by Productvision for a theatrical film. He has appeared on NBC, NPR, CNN, HBO, XM, and CSPAN, among other broadcast outlets, and was a major contributor to the four-volume Encyclopedia Latina. His books have been published in Europe and Latin America as well as the United States. He has been affiliated with the University of Arizona’s Latin American Area Center since 1990, and makes his home in Tucson with his wife.
